A wedding invitation appointment with one of our brides this weekend brought up lots of questions that come up often so I thought I would clear up some of the mystery behind the ever confusing wedding rsvp card. Just for fun, RSVP means “Répondez, s’il vous plaît” or “Please reply” in French.
Firstly, what do you put after that floating letter M on the response card?
That line is to help you get started with your title. For example Ms. Mary Harris, if your title does not begin with the letter M you may cross out the letter M and write your name out on the card, Doctor Mary Harris or whatever your title is.
What is will attend?
The next line allows your hosts to know if you will be attending. The example in the photo above is simpler than some, just check off whether or not you will be attending. If your invitation has
will attend, tradition states that you leave it blank if you plan to attend and add "not" if you do not plan to attend. The trend has been to write out the response card as the above photo to avoid any confusion.
How will my host know how many people I'm bringing?
You don't have to worry about including how many people you'll be bringing as the address on the envelope and inner envelope make it clear how many people are invited. If the invitation is addressed to Ms. Mary Harris and Guest when you reply simply indicate on the M line that Ms. Mary Harris and Mr. Right will be attending. Give the name of your guest whenever possible if that person's name wasn't on the original invitation envelope already.
